Maharaja’s Lakeside Indian restaurant, a much loved dining institution located in Sydney’s Hills District, has been serving fine Indian food for over two decades.
Maharaja, also spelled Maharajah, is a Sanskrit title that meanas ‘great ruler‘ or great King. It is a name synonymous to the legend of true Indian hospitality, where food is extravagantly and lovingly prepared, and the guest is treated like royalty. So you just know this is a place worth visiting.
The team behind the Lakeside Indian have been serving exquisite, authentic Indian cuisine in Sydney for nearly thirty years. Their first restaurant was launched in Kirribilli in 1991, soon to be followed by restaurants at Dee Why, St. Leonards and Rhodes.
If you’re a lover of Indian cuisine, you should also consider Maharaja’s celebrated Indian restaurant in North Dural, named ‘Haveli‘. It has the classic timeless ambience of India and is fitted out with impressively authentic decor.

Should you ever find yourself on the south bank of the Murray River, south of the border between Victoria and New South Wales, you should try out Yarrawonga’s Lakeside Indian Restaurant.
It is open for dinner every night of the week, and has become a favourite dining institution of locals and tourists alike. Lakeside Indian Yarrawonga has been serving up quality food and friendly service in the north east of Victoria for over twenty years.
Travel approximately 50 kms west of Sydney’s CBD and you’ll find the newish city/suburb of Jordan Springs, NSW, and the Bharat Lakeside Indian restaurant.
Bharat is the official Sanskrit name of India: Bharata Ganarajya (Republic of India). It is a name that every Indian national takes pride in.
The Bharat Lakeside Indian restaurant serves up dishes that are a mixture of north and south Indian fusion, both spicy and mild (for all taste buds). Renowned locally for its signature Biryanis, the house speciality is its Railway Mutton Curry. It’s a must try.

The best Indian restaurants in Melbourne
Melbourne is our home town, and we can be a touch proprietorial about the quality of the restaurants here. However, when we say that Tonka is a wonderful Indian restaurant we’re hardly going out on a limb here. Tonka is celebrated far and wide, and deserves its place as a particular favourite of Eatability.

The best Indian restaurants in Brisbane
We can recommend both Indian Mehfil in Ipswich and Garlic Clove in Ormeau when in, and around, Brisbane.
Now, we know that both these restaurants involve a decent hike from the Brisbane CBD (about 40kms) and so will not suit everybody. However, they both offer consistently inexpensive and flavoursome, Indian cuisine.
If you find yourself in Melbourne, give modern Indian restaurant Elchi a try.
The Indian Mehfil chain of cafes around Brisbane (Taringa and Ipswich) can be be relied upon. The pumpkin curry has been a favourite of ours. We think that the CBD Mehfil may have permenantly closed its doors recently, unfortunately. Another Covid restaurant victim, we would suggest.

The ever-popular Jasmin Indian restaurant is an unsurprising choice for great Indian food in the city of churches.
Also consider strongly The Bombay Bicycle Club in the inner northern suburb of Ovingham. Innovative food, great decor and it shares a name with one of our favourite bands too. What’s not to like?
